Our Story
Kia Kaha Apparel was created from a simple phrase that became a powerful reminder during some of life's most difficult moments.
In high school I developed a love for the game of rugby. I was struggling mentally and rugby and the phrase Kia Kaha saved my life. When I first encountered the Māori phrase Kia Kaha, which translates to "Stay Strong," "Be Strong," or "Forever Strong." It was a phrase printed on our sleeves as a reminder. That reminder stuck with me off the field and I put Kia Kaha on my lock screen.
Rugby taught me how to physically take a hit, but many of the battles I faced couldn't be won through physicality alone. Throughout high school and during my rugby career, I struggled with anxiety and depression. During those difficult seasons of life, Kia Kaha became more than a phrase printed on a sleeve—it became a daily reminder to keep moving forward, even when the challenges weren't visible to anyone else.
The phrase didn't make the struggles disappear, but it reminded me that I had overcome hard days before and could overcome them again. It became a symbol of perseverance, hope, and the belief that no matter how difficult today may be, tomorrow is worth fighting for.
As I continued my journey, I realized that my struggles were not unique. Everyone is carrying something. Whether it's anxiety, depression, grief, illness, financial hardship, addiction, loss, or simply the weight of life's challenges, we all face moments that test our strength.
That realization became the foundation of Kia Kaha Apparel.
More than a clothing brand, Kia Kaha is a movement built around encouragement, resilience, and community. Every design, collection, and garment serves as a reminder to Stay Strong through whatever challenges life may bring. The apparel itself isn't the source of strength—it simply reminds us that strength already exists within each of us.
When you wear Kia Kaha, you're joining a community of people who choose to keep moving forward. People who support one another, stand strong through adversity, and refuse to give up when life gets difficult.
Our hope is simple: that whenever you see the words Kia Kaha, you'll be reminded that your story isn't over, your struggles do not define you, and there is always hope ahead.
Kia Kaha. Stay Strong.
